Winter Handicap : 01.10.11 : 5 miles
(from Andrew Dodd - handicapper)
Minor problem with no-one telling the poor ol' timekeepers where the finish was but I guess
we live and learn and won't be making that mistake again! Thank goodness we had a staggered
start so that we at least know who won. However by chatting to all the finishers I have
been able to work out who was in front of and who was behind who and by means of logic that
gives me the finishing positions! It means we don't have times but if anyone knows theirs
(even approximate) and can email me then I can ensure that the times are recorded for posterity.
Also if anyone knows of any errors that would also be helpful. It was a lovely day and a
great course - I think we were all surprised at the low turnout (though there were loads of
marshals!) but it was a great day for a run (jog) in the forest. Thanks to all who helped -
particularly Bill for keeping a clear head at the start.

Orion Centenary Mob Match : 7.5 MILES : 22.10.11
A glorious sunny day and a bone dry Epping Forest set the stage perfectly for
Orion's Centenary Year mobmatch.
The annual fixtures against Ranelagh Harriers, Blackheath and South London
Harriers go back to 1912, so a match against them and Thames Hare and Hounds
(who we only began racing in 1920) was an essential part of our centenary
celebrations.
An impressive 91 Orion runners finished the course, beating our previous record
of 82 set in the 1930s.
Blackheath brought a strong team of 41 and Ranelagh 33, with the field boasting
193 finishers.
First man home was South London's Ryan Evans in 45.02 and first lady was a guest
R Karaliauskaite in 50.16. Orion were led home by Ben Hall in 2nd, though but
for following a wayward Blackheath runner off the course, that honour would
probably have gone to new boy Matt Woodman. First Orion lady was the strong
running, Clare Thurgood.
Orion's quality and strength in numbers ensured a clean sweep in the team
results: with a victories over Blackheath (with 39 scoring for each team),
Ranelagh (with 31 scoring for each team) and in the multimob beating Blackeath,
Ranelagh and South London (with 12 scoring for each team).
After the race and trophy presentations, the competitors, clutching their
well-earned centenary mugs as a memento of the day, made short work of the
excellent buffet.
Mobmatches are an essential part of what makes Orion a special club, with the
emphasis on everyone scoring (or pushing the other team's total up), on team
spirit and on forging friendships and rivalries out on the course.
Saturday epitomised that and was a fantastic day and an excellent way to
celebrate 100 years of Orion running in the Forest.
Enormous thanks to all who ran from Orion and particularly our guests, as well
as to all the people without whom the race could not have happened: Bill and all
the marshalls, the timekeepers, Nigel for doing the results, the trail-layers,
Alan and everyone in the kitchen. If anyone who ran or helped didnt get a mug,
let Alan or me know.
Tim Wright

Loughton Vets : 5 Miles : 05.11.11
From George Richardson of Loughton AC:
We were very lucky with the weather: no rain, no wind, mild for November. And the surface was still
firm, despite recent heavy rain.
We almost reached last year's record field (78), and the winner was over half a minute quicker than
Gary Bagnall's time last year. It is a pretty accurate 5-mile course, so any time below 30 minutes
for an all-vets race is good. As you will see from the results, it was the final farewell from the
Walthamstow team members who have now joined Orion, following disbanding of the Club.
If anyone left something behind, the lost property is as follows:
women's changing room - a black Ron Hill glove
men's changing room - a pair of size 12.5 (!) dark blue Adidias shoes
If those items are from any competitor likely to be at the next Chingford League, they
can be returned then.

Stebbing 10 : 13.11.11
A number of Orion runners competed at the Rememberance Sunday Stebbing 10 yesterday in glorious
November sunshine. The race was preceeded by a short service at the Memorial on Stebbing High
Street and 2 minutes silence.
Matt Woodman went on to win the men's race AND led the Orion men's team to 1st with Neil McGoun
and Ian Clark - four Orion guys were in the top ten (Colin Read - the 4th).
Clare Thurgood came second in the ladies race with a sparkling new PB by 2 minutes!
Hayley Barron, Anne De Asha and Frances Oakley also ran for the ladies, and Sasha ran for Eton Manor.
Everyone said they enjoyed it! Afterwards...

The 55th Roding Rally : Epping Forest :19/20.11.11
Orion had teams in this wonderful overnight event - orienteering or masochism - YOU decide.
This document (produced by the Epping Outdoor Group who run the event) tells
you a shedload about it - and also contains results.
Nearly 90 teams participated - and Orion had teams in there, competing successfully!
I'd bet there'll be even more Orion Harriers participating next year.
Ask Stuart Colley... if your interest has been fired up!

Ware Cup, Loughton : 10.12.11
From George Richardson, Loughton AC:
Weren't we lucky with the weather? NO WIND and sunny. The going looked good, too.
At the time I thought it might have been a record turnout, but that was 98 in 2008. It
was 84 this year.
I mistakenly believed that Eton Manor had the winning women's team last year, but it
was Victoria Park in both races. So, I believe there is a trophy lurking somewhere in
St Augustine's Hall to be passed over to this year's winners.
We hold an item of lost property: a pair of size 10.5 black Nike cross country spikes. If
the owner lets us know, they can be handed over at the next Chingford League race, unless
they are desperately needed before then!

Orion retain Ilford 10 mile Team Trophy on Hogmanay!
After all the eats, drinks and overindulgence that christmas brings, and with the New Year
celebrations only a few hours away, it was time for Orion Harriers to defend their Ilford
10mile xc team championship on a hilly, muddy 3 lap course. A very good core of Orion men
had turned out with only one thing on their minds - to race and conquer this tough, muddy
course and end 2011 as they meant to go on in 2012 - winners!
Neil McGoun led the team out with a great run finishing 10th. Just behind him was the tired
newly-crowned Irish 10mile championship bronze medallist, Brian Jenkins [12th]. This was
followed by a great run from Neil Swift [14th]; a solid run from Barny Foot [16th]; strong
running from Dave Brock [18th]. On the up and up with a great run was Craig Horsburgh [19th],
with another solid run from Joe Happe just behind in 20th, and Quin Broadbent who had been
leading them ending up in [21st]. There was a solid perfomance from Andy Lunn [34th] with
Stuart Colley fresh back after a long injury [46th], a great effort from Paul Williams [83rd],
and bringing the team home was the ever-present, go anywhere Pete Deadman [120th]. The
team championship was Orion’s again.
Our thoughts go out to Giles Hopkinson who had driven all the way back from Manchester
early in the morning only to miss the 11am race start, but then he had thought race
start time was two in the afternoon!!

Essex Medal for Frankie Conway!
In form Frankie Conway, came away from the Essex Cross Country Championships with a well
deserved bronze medal in the Under 20s. Less than 10 seconds covered the first 3 who finished
half a minute clear of the chasing pack.
Orion women were an excellent 6th place, despite missing Clare Thurgood who although far from
well, still made the starting line up to give it a go. Lisa Clifford and Christine Inch were
first back, followed by Mary Armitage and Angie Legg, with Julie Robinson and Aleta Wetherall
making up the successful team. The women put the men to shame, who in the end only fielded four
seniors, the ever dependable Pete Deadman, Ian Clark nipping in ahead of Neil McGoun, followed
by Tim Wright nursing a broken arm up and down the Basildon hills.
