(Southern Men's League Division 3 North Saturday 3 August 2008, Walthamstow) Forest Athletic the combined track and field team of Orion Harriers and Eton Manor managed their best performance of the season at Walthamstow on Saturday 3 August with 16 Athletes turning out and scoring a total of 89 points, Forest's biggest score of the season, enabling Forest to finish second in the match behind League Division 3 Champions Colchester United (The combined Colchester Harriers AC and Colchester & Tendring AC) team, giving the league leaders a good run for their money and at the same time Forest finished ahead of the League Division's 5th placed team Braintree AC, indicating that Forest could have finished much higher in the Divison had the Men's Track and Field team received better support from the abundance of ability available to us in the club but for one reason or another athletes not turning out for the 5 Saturday matches this summer in a season that promised much more. The Forest Team has this season suffered from a lack of support from athletes and could really benefit from more Orion seniors and Juniors taking part to avoid the team not having competitors in certain events or not having a 'B' string second competitor in many events plus some athletes having to take on 3 and 4 events on the day. If we were able to fill all the gaps Forest would be up there challenging for promotion and winning these League Division fixtures ! The last match did see a marked improvement in support with 16 athletes turning out but the team is still short of at least another half dozen or so competitors to give us the required boost and we need to re-group for next season and aim for a much higher league position. A new Orion Team Manager will be taking over to work with Steve Becket from Eton Manor and hopefully they'll get the full support of the Club's athletes. On the good side Forest have consolidated their place in Division 3 following last year's promotion and in this final league fixture at Walthamstow, we scored our best points total in a match this season. The two second placings in our final two fixtures (Chelmsford and Walthamstow), chalked up vitally important League points, keeping Forest just above the relegation zone. Forest finished in 14th place in the Division with Basildon AC 15th and Chelmsford AC 16th both relegated and making the drop to Division 4. Orion's impressive junior hurdles specialist Huy Vu was the busiest Forest athlete on the day competing in no less than three track and two field events, Huy amassed a lot of points for the team with four 2nd places in the 110m high hurdles, 400m hurdles, the Triple jump and Javelin before also running the 4 x 100m Relay team which finished 3rd. Another of Orion's impressive juniors High Jumper Tommy Black took 2nd in the 'B' string High Jump with 1.75 and second in the 'B' string Triple Jump with 10.71 before putting his jumping skills to good use stepping in to the 400m Hurdles 'B' string slot with 3rd position in 73.3 Forest welcomed back Rory Vanhorn after an absence and Rory made a valuable contribution to the team in his three events of the day with two 2nd placings, just pipped on the line in the 'A' string 100m clocking 11.4 plus Rory took 2nd place in the 'A' string High Jump with a best of 1.80 before winning the 'A' string Long Jump with a best leap of 6.40. Saleem Baptiste was 3rd in the 'B' string Long Jump with 4.20m. Mark Atkinson ran the 200m/400m double taking 3rd place in the 'A' string 200m with 25.3 and 2nd place in the 'B' string 400m with 58.1s. Forest and Orion's Danny Moses done the middle distance 800m and 1500m double and after 3rd place in a quality 800m race clocking 1.57, Danny ran a brilliant 1500m taking a well deserved victory, out kicking the Colchester duo over the last 200m to win in 4.19. Forest and Orion's Jack Stroud was a winner in the 'B' string 800m with a pb of 2.01. Forest and Orion's 5000m runner Shay Joyce ran the 5k in a freak heavy downpour and after a slow opening three laps Shay took second place in 16.52 before stepping in to fill the 'B' string gap in the 1500m where he took valuable points with another 2nd place. Ian Lambert filled the 5000m 'B' string slot and took a valuable 2nd place for Forest in 18.42. In the pole vault, young newcomer to the event Phil Chittock impressed with 2nd place in the 'A' string with a best height of 2.40m and in the 'B' string John Mahon was also 2nd with 2.05m - John also returned as temporary team manager for the day a job Bill Black filled at the previous fixture - thanks to them both In the throws events for Forest it was Orion's stalwarts Hugh Sigrist and Bill Black who were doing the rounds, collecting valuable points for Forest with Hugh Sigrist covering three events and Bill four events. Hugh scored two 'A' string second places in the Hammer, shot and 3rd in the Discuss whilst his partner Bill Black secured four 3rd places in the Javelin, Hammer, shot and discus. The Forest relay teams rounded off the day with third in the 4 x 100m and second place in the 4x400m relay - Leg times Danny Moses 54.4, Jack Stroud 53.6, Mark Atkinson 57.6 and Ashley Alexis 55.54 for a total time of 3.43.8 This gave the Forest team second place overall on the day and the best result of the season since last years promotion. In the triple jump there was a Forest double victory with the 'A' string won by Orion's Huy Vu with a jump of 12.39m. Huy is one of Coach Chris Finney's successful young squad. Carlton Campbell then beat his PB by some way in winning the 'B' string event with 12.06 metres. The success in the field events continued when Orion's young Tommy Black took second place in the High Jump 'A' string event with a best height of 1.70m. Carlton Campbell then chalked up his second victory of the day winning the 'B' string high jump also with 1.70m. Track & Field Athletics - Men's team battle through tough opener as they begin life in Division 3 at Walthamstow - Saturday 3 May 2008. Forest Athletic (Orion Harriers & Eton Manor) Men's Track and Field team began life in Division 3 North of the Southern Men's League on Saturday 3rd May, opening the season at home and although it was a tough baptism with Forest finishing 4th from the 4 teams involved in the fixture, bearing in mind that Forest faced the three teams expected to lead the Division along with several Forest Athletes unavailable and several others going home early with injury or illness, the team rallied well with some athletes covering 3, 4 or 5 events each This spirited team effort enabled Forest to keep the final points tally reasonably close to the opposition which will be vitally important as the season wears on. Team Managers John Mahon (Orion) and Steve Beckett (Eton Manor) were in charge for the last time together, this being John's last match in charge before moving on to Enfield and Haringey AC and I think the Club should thank John for his time as SML Team Manager as the credit for organising last years successful promotion from Division 4 should go to the two Team Managers John Mahon (Orion) and Steve Beckett (Eton Manor) who pulled together the team and got the athletes out from both clubs including a number of Seniors and promising youngsters, many tackling Track and Field for the first time last year. Hopefully a new Team Manager will soon step in to take over from John and lets hope that we get plenty of interest from Orion athletes wanting to compete in Track and Field so we can climb the League Table and consolidate our position this year. Match Result, Round 1 at Walthamstow TEAM
