Orion repeat superb Women's Team Victory in Canvey "5" Road Race [Sunday 29th March 2009]
It was a great day for the handful of Orion Harriers athletes taking part in the ever
popular and well organised Canvey "5" Road Race, run over a flat, fast out and back
course which skirts along the Canvey Sea Wall.
440 finishers enjoyed excellent organisation and a day of fine weather on what could
be the 15th and final running of the race unless race organiser Steve Kemp and his
team can be convinced to carry on. Steve said "The team of helpers and marshals are
the same people that helped out 15 years ago and they aren't getting any younger,
mostly pensioners and rotary club members. Plenty of Southend On Sea AC members
want to run the race but none want to help or marshal" he said sadly and added
"fresh blood was needed."
In the Men's race Orion's Shay Joyce was in great form and in a good quality field Shay
ran his legs off to finish in a great 10th place, scoring a great personal best time of 27:17.
After the young Orion Women's team of Natalie Kipps, Jay Andrews and Lauren
MacGregor won the team prize in 2008 with Natalie the overall Women's race winner,
the challenge for Orion was to retain their title without Natalie who is currently out of
action recovering from a foot injury.
With Lauren and Jay in good form and having greatly improved over the last 12 months, into
the team with them came Zoe Woodward and Orion's women lined up against tougher
opposition from last year as Southend AC were also fielding a strong young group of runners
with an eye firmly on the team prize. They were one amongst a list of other teams from
Basildon AC, Springfield Striders, Chelmsford AC, Benfleet RC, Billericay Striders and others.
Good performances were required and good performances were delivered ! The two
Maxine Joyce coached youngsters turned in great performances to smash their 5 mile Personal Best times.
Jay Andrews ran a blinder to finish second in the Senior Women's race in a time of 31:26,
only seconds behind race winner Karen Goode of Basildon AC. Jay's great run saw her
knock a huge 4 minutes 31 seconds off her off her previous 5 mile best time. Lauren
MacGregor came through a rough patch after 2 miles to pick up the pace again to finish
in an excellent 7th place in yet another great time of 32:40, taking a big 2 minutes 54 seconds
off her previous 5 miles pb. It was then all down to Zoe Woodward as both Orion
and Southend AC had two runners home. Gladly it was Zoe who turned into the finishing
straight a few places ahead of the third Southend runner to grab the Team Win for Orion.
As it turned out Zoe, who finished in 33:50 for 14th place overall, also captured the Second
Women's Vet Over 45 Prize to go with her team trophy. Jay Andrews collected a magnificent
Second Place Trophy along with her Team Trophy and a nice bundle of training kit goodies
with Lauren MacGregor picking up her Team trophy. it was a highly successful day for Orion.
Another Orion Harrier in the race was "Marathon Training" Tony Maru, who had run 15 miles
the previous day as part of his London training build up. Tony struggled round in 33:25 for
79th place looking a little tired to say the least.
All in all an excellent day for Orion Harriers who certainly grabbed the limelight at this event.

Rotterdam Marathon : 05.04.09
Andrea McQueen and Anne de Asha ran Rotterdam marathon on Sunday and both did PBs.
Andrea came in at 4.04 and Anne managed 4.01, so both are very pleased. Anne would
recommend the course - very flat, not too crowded and a very smooth start
They were lucky enough to be able to walk to the start from their hotel too!
And then limp back to their hot baths afterwards...
Berlin Half Marathon : 05.04.09
Neil McGoun placed 117 out of 21725 finishers in 1:17:18 on the same day that the above
orion harriers were running Rotterdam. A good weekend for our internationals...
Berlin comes highly recommended: pancake flat course, well organised,
and an interesting city.
(Earlier in the season - 15/3/09 - Neil and and Chris Shapland ran Silverstone 1/2 marathon
Neil 27th in 1:18:18 : Chris was 109th in 1:26:06 : 6801 finished.)

TRACK & FIELD
Twickenham : 25.04.09
The first Orion Ladies athletics team made their debut in the Southern Women's Track and Field League.
Due to the Marathon and Mini-Marathon being the next day, the team was heavily depleted, but a team of
Lauren Richardson, Jo Hadaway, Natalie Kipps, Rebecca Kipps and Jessica Kipps managed to turn out for
the meet. A big effort was made by all to cover as many events as possible, with good performances
made throughout the day.
Lauren managed to cover the maximum 5 events, with notable performances in the discus and javelin,
where she achieved PBs in both events. Jo covered 3 events and performed well in the high jump and
threw a perfect PB in the javelin to finish 8th in the B string event. Becky and Jess had
good runs in the 200m, with Becky also performing well in the 400m event earlier on in the meet.
A notable performance was made by Jess in the long jump, where she finished 4th in the A string
event, with a new PB of 4m17.
The 4 girls then managed to race BOTH the 4x100m and 4x400m relays. This was Natalie's
first meet as ladies track manager and she was justifiably very pleased with the effort and
performances put in by all her team members, which ended up with Orion taking 8th place
out of 10 teams...a massively impressive feat for a 5 woman team!
Contact Natalie to join in her fighting team! natalie.kipps@btinternet.com
The next track meet is 30th May at Bracknell AC.

CHASE THE TRAIN : 26.04.09
From Dave Brock:
"Sunday April 26th Marathon day I believe, when you all were saying them immortal words of never, never
again will I run a marathon, that's my last one!!
Some of us though were getting ready for the 2.15pm annual Chase the Train in North Norfolk along the
Bure valley railway line from Aylsham to Wroxham.
This picturesque 9 mile stretch of Bure valley countryside through small country villages of Brampton,
Buxton and Coltishall is well worth doing especially on marathon day!
I'd been injured for over six weeks and had only just got back into training two weeks ago so did not
expect much but a picturesque, solid run out, so why is it when that race number is pinned on your vest
your legs decide to go for it?
I was not alone at the race, John Leversedge of Enfield & Haringey AC (ex-Orion 15 winner!) had moved
to North Norfolk 2 years ago and we have become good friends and training partner. John's partner Sara
and Sacha and our young daughter Poppy had come along to support us on a beautiful glorious sunny afternoon.
The race got under way finally after some delay as you may know Norfolk folk are not fast to do anything,
a little laid back one could say, but not the leading runner he was on a mission, we in the following
group were to have our own race as the winner had already been sort.
After a six week lay off, I was as John was, most surprised to see me pushing on in the early stages,
but to tell you the truth I was just holding on. As the race unfolded John pushed on catching the 3rd
and then the 2nd place runner to take 2nd place himself. Now as I said race numbers do funny things and
I decided if John could do that so could I and just like him I caught 4th and then 3rd taking me into
3rd place, there I stayed until 3/4 of a mile from the finish when I was overtaken by someone with go
faster legs.
Finishing 4th was a great result for me after time off, lacking fitness and the "old weight issue" until
I saw the age of the guy who flew passed me! That quickly brought me down to ground.
A great race, in a lovely county, friendly folk and a free return to finish train ride just to mellow
away, I was so glad that I never did the marathon."

Harlow Womens 5k Series: Race 1 : 05:05:09
In spite of arriving late and giving the rest of the field a 200 metres head start, Orion's two 15 years
old starlets Lauren MacGregor and Jay Andrews managed to overtake the field and hit the front just before
the 3K marker, going on to score a significant 1 - 2 in this race, which was the first of a 3 race series
which the duo will be competing in this summer.

Summer 5 mile Handicap : 09.05.09
Millie Hall ran 3 miles in training over at Highams Park in the morning then, accompanied by her brothers -
who can also run a bit - she cantered over the handicap course and never saw another Orion member
until the timekeepers, as she crossed the finish line!
Neil McGoun stormed round the course fastest of all - flying over the hard ground. There was some dispute as
to why Andy Warner set off ahead of his ageing father, but Andy took no part in the acrimony - preferring
to let his fast feet do the talking... until it came to going up to the bar at the RFH.. his Dad says...
Geoff Messenger was deadly serious as he stalked round the course, perhaps sensing a possibility of a gong...

Shay Joyce gave an impressive display to finish 2nd in the popular 2009 Bluebell 5.2 Miles race, run
through the lovely Little Haven Nature Reserve at Rayleigh in Essex. With excellent dry and sunny
weather and the bluebells in full bloom the undulating course took the record entry of 350 runners
through the 92 acres of open hay meadows and the welcome shade in the ancient woodland sections of
this interesting and picturesque course. With increasing competitor numbers reflecting the
popularity of this event the organisers were delighted to announce that over £2100 was raised for
the Essex Wildlife Trust which was another record. All this money goes towards maintaining the
ocal nature reserves and purchasing new ones. Shay finished the course in 28:53 behind winner
Crispin Bloomfield of Billericay Striders but ahead of past winner, fast finishing Trevor Keyes
of Havering Mayesbrook Athletics Club.

Only 4 teams but good quality running allied with really rubbish route-finding...
This was VERY PLEASANT day in the sun, watching athletes plough up the
long hill from the Ching Valley to a start/finish beside wind-sheltering
trees at the Warren Wood.
A committee of great and good assembled at HQ to pick the teams. Despite that Assembly,
Quin picked the teams anyway and those teams would have been well-balanced,
finishing in close order if runners hadn't gone awol once they'd vanished amid the trees,
at the bottom of the slope, far, far out of sight... And mind.
Andy Ruffy ran off - in good position bequeathed by Pete Bulaitis (who'd ran out of his socks) -
with the sounds of... er... radio commentary on West Ham being stuffed by Everton
echoing in his ears. Andy was gone 'for some time'. No one went searching, he'd ran the course pre-race,
so... "Andy'll be fine" the guys lying on the green sward assured each other.
He was eventually spotted emerging from 180 degrees in the wrong direction. He was heckled up the hill,
collapsing at the tree with a yell that collapsed the rest of us in giggles - "I got lost!"
Paul Robinson, who needed no pre-race course run cos he knows the forest so well that...
well... Paul also "Got lost"...
Paul's excuses/explanations reverberated with tales of bushes, far Kathmandu, polar peaks and Ecclefechan.
He wasn't believed.
This, of course, meant that two teams now had a tad bit more to do than the other 2. And they couldn't.
Quin was a wee bit stressed at 'the race being ruined' by Paul and Andy but everyone else chilled out.
It really was a smasahing day and event - we ALL agreed.
And those who ACTUALLY ran the course were unanimous that it was wonderful course and
all swore to be back next year.
Though perhaps Andy and Paul's team-mates swore a wee bit more than the others.

Orion Harriers Lauren MacGregor made it two wins from two when she won the second race in the Harlow Womens 5K Road Race
Series on Tuesday evening 19th May in a pb time of 19:22. Lauren went out fast from the start and moved
further away from the field as the race progressed, building up a 40 seconds lead by the finish to win comfortably
from experienced Garden City runner Mandy Livingstone who was second in 20:04. Orion's Jay Andrews was third in 20:39,
well clear of the 4th placed runner Dionne Jones of Harlow 21:25. Orion's Katy Brett was running her first race of
the series and finished 11th in 22:33. This race was the second of the 3 race series and overall Lauren leads the points

Hutton Roof Fell Race : 7M/1300 feet: 23-05-09
In a very satisfying race for himself, Neil McGoun led ESSEX home in the Inter-Counties Fell Race Championship up at
Hutton Roof, with Harold Wyber third man in the Essex Team.
Of course, this event was but a tiny part of the action-packed weekend that both runners built around it. Neil biked England
coast to coast, then went up to Scotland to do Ben Nevis, whilst Harold followed the Inter-counties on Saturday with the
Helvellyn race on Sunday - an evil climb just after the start, and Shutingsloe fell race on the Monday.
I vaguely recall when I had legs like those lads...

Women's F+T team : Bracknell : 30.05.09
The Orion ladies team had a good 8th place finish in the Southern Women's League second match at Bracknell AC. The team
was again depleted due to the M25 and various other commitments, but 5 athletes managed to make their way to Bracknell
and fill their full quota of events for the day. Jessica Kipps and Lauren Richardson put in good performances in the
long jump, finishing 9th for the A string and 7th for the B string respectively. Whilst the long jump was on going,
Lauren also managed to run a B string 800m race, with Jay Andrews running in the A string 800m. Jay had a strong two
laps to get herself a new PB of 2.29:4. Straight after this was the discus for athletes Rebecca Kipps and Jay, during
which Rebecca also ran a 400m, coming in 7th place for the B string. Natalie Kipps managed to run a PB for the 400m,
finishing 4th for the A string race. Lauren also competed in the high jump, and teamed up with Natalie in the javelin
and shot putt competitions, gaining precious points for the team. Jessica raced well in the 100m to finish 9th, and
also competed with sister Rebecca in the 200m, where they came 8th for both A and B string races. Unfortunately traffic
on the M25 resulted in the the loss of Katy Brett from the 3000m. Natalie managed to gain 4th place in this event after
moving up from the B string, followed by 2nd place in the 1500m, where she was supported by a strong run from Jay, who
finished 1st in the B string competition. The women then managed to make up both the 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams to
end the day off well.
The next match is at Parliament Hill on 27th June. Any help is appreciated, and if you'd like anymore information PLEASE
contact Natalie (natalie.kipps@btinternet.com). More information will be available nearer the time.
Harlow Womens 5k Road Race Series: 02.06:09
Orion Harriers 15 years old Lauren MacGregor won the Harlow Womens 5K Road Race Series on Tuesday evening 2nd June to
complete a clean sweep of 3 wins from 3 races to become the 2009 champion and youngest ever winner. Competing in a
senior womens race didn't phaze the youngster who is coached by former England Cross-Country International and British
Road Running Champion Maxine Joyce. Lauren recorded a best time of 19:22 in the second race of the series and beat
field of 70 senior women in this well established summer road race series. This was the youngsters first taste of
competing in a senior race series which she thoroughly ejoyed but it wasn't without teething problems. Lauren and
her training partner at Orion's Jay Andrews another promising 15 years old youngster coached by Joyce got lost on the
way to the first race and arrived late but even after giving the rest of the field a 300 metres start the duo managed
to catch the leaders and 3km and go on to record a 1-2. Jay Andrews also ran well throughout the series finishing with
a 2nd place and two 3rd places to take a final overall 3rd place in the series. In the second race MacGregor dominated
winning by a 40 seconds margin and in the final race on Tuesday, after a fast start, Lauren managed to stamp her
authority on the race by the half way point as the main opposition began to tire, moving away to win in 19:29 but
by an even bigger margin of 67 seconds from experienced Garden City runner Mandy Livingstone in 2nd place. Jay
Andrews who took third place overall had a best time over the course of 20:20 in the first race and she clocked
20:49 in race three.
Orion Harriers were delighted to also win the series Team prize as Orion's Katy Brett finished
11th in races two and three with a best time of 22:22, helping the Chingford based club beat off the challenges of
teams from Harlow, Garden City, Bishops Stortford, Cambridge, Barnet, Saffron Walden and Ford's.

Woodford Open Graded Track & Field Meeting 09.06.09
There was a clutch of excellent performances by young Orion Harriers athletes at the
Woodford Open Graded Track Meeting on Tuesday 9th June. The meeting attracted
as big entry which led to no less than 8 graded 100 metres races and 6 races each
over 200 metres and 800 metres. The 800 metres distance attracted the majority of
Orion runners. The 3000 metres race was also big with 23 finishers.
3000 Metres
Shay Joyce was second over all in the 3000 metres race with a time of 9:40.34.
Katy Brett running her first ever 3000 metres finished 7th Woman in 12:41.05.
Orion junior star Lauren MacGregor once again smashed her PB, chopping a massive
13 seconds off her previous best to finish in 10:28.00 which see's Lauren rise up the
UK Under 17 Women's rankings to number 18 and the time equalled the Under 17
club record set by Danielle Sale in 2004. Lauren was second Women across the line
and first Under 17. Jay Andrews, recovering from a heavy cold clocked what for Jay is a
slow 11:17.53 but done very well under the circumstances and it was good enough
still to finish as forth Woman across the line and second Under 17.
800 Metres
Race 1 was one of the best of the night, ending dramatically with a near blanket finish
involving the first four runners across the line. Orion's Jack Stroud was 3rd in a PB time
of 1:59.38 just two tenths of a second ahead of Orion's Frankie Conway 4th overall
and second Under 20 in a time of 1:59.58. Jack celebrated breaking the 2 minute
barrier for the first time and Frankie who ducked under 2 minutes for the first time last
month at the Essex County Championships also scored a PB by under a tenth of a
second.
Race 2 saw a win for Orion's Danny Moses in an excellent 1:57.90 which was
just two tenths of a second outside his PB. Danny may have benefited from being in
race 1
Race 3 was another excellent close race which ended with another Orion Harriers win,
this time with Under 20 Ben Hall leading the field home with a winning PB time of
2:05.06. Ben's brother Under 17 Auberon Hall was 4th also with an excellent PB of
2:07.05.
Race 4 was won by Orion's Under 15 Ben Silverstone with an excellent 2:16.44.
Race 6 was yet another Orion victory as first year Under 15 George Hoy crossed
the line 1st in 2:26.96. Orion's Under 13 star Georgia Tuckfield was 3rd overall and
first Under 13 Girl in 2:32.20.

The Midsummer Munro Race : Box Hill : 20.06.09
Clare Thurgood was 2nd lady (14th overall) in the Midsummer Munro, finishing in 2h 3.56 (5m faster than last year!).
This is a great race to do, according to Clare... but it was voted Runner's World's race of the year, 2008,
so she's in good company. She continues...
"It's an out and back course on Box Hill in Surrey, with 3000ft of ascent
and descent and a real Scottish piper at the top of the first hill and again at halfway!
I would definitely recommend this as one to do!!"
Q1 The bagpipes are intended to drive the english away - so why is that a USP (unique selling point)?
Q2 How does one check that he was "a real Scottish piper"...?
....unless he was only playing reels.... hmm.... The MacMind boggles...

Orion's Neil McGoun won a hard fought race heading home in 22.47 just ahead of Woodford's Darren Southcote and Serpentine's Robin Tuddenham.
Zoe Woodward of Eton Manor and Orion was first woman home, followed by Sarah Colbert, Springfield Striders and Helen Smith UNA.
The Forest, its lush trees and hills was the star... for the 70+ finishers.

Southern Womens Track & Field League Senior Division 3 Match, Highgate 27.6.09 (Match 3, 2009 Season)
Orion Harriers Senior Womens Track and Field Team produced their best result of the season so far at the Highgate
Track, Parliament Hill on Saturday 27 June. Having bravely struggled through the first two fixtures at Richmond
and Bracknell with just 5 Athletes to cover 10 Track events and 8 Field events A and B string! However at Highgate
a team of 13 Orion athletes made a huge difference and from 8th placings in matches 1 and 2, Orion moved up to
finish 5th from the 10 teams competing and were only a handful of points behind the teams in 2nd, 3rd and 4th place,
in what was a close affair between the teams finishing between 3rd and 7th.
A big well done to all those who competed on the day with some Orion Women athletes covering 3 and 4 events. The
youthful Orion Harriers team included 5 Under 17's, an Under 20 and an Under 23, none of whom were phazed by
competing in the Senior Womens Division and all acquitted themselves well.
Emma Tuckfield came out of retirement to volunteer herself for the 400m Hurdles and stepped in to the A string slot.
Emma who was a useful 800m/1500m runner a few years back so this was a new event and a new beginning! Emma unfortunately
tore a thigh muscle on landing over the first hurdle but in spite of the pain bravely battled on for 5th place and 6 well
earned points for Orion to get the team off to a good start. In spite of not being able to walk or drive home after the
race Emma said, "I'll be back!"
Jessica Kipps (U17) covered 4 events running the 100m and 200m sprint double with an A String 5th in the 100m timed at
14.4 and likewise 5th in the 200m in 29.6. Jessica went on to help Orion's 4 x 400m team to 4th from 10 teams and turned
her hand to the Long Jump B String finishing 6th with a best leap of 3.63m.
Melissa Timpson (U17) was another youngster covering 4 events. Melissa was 5th in the B string 100m in 15.0 and also ran
the third leg in the 4 x 100m relay team which finished 7th. Melissa then moved into the field with a good Triple Jump
performance finishing 8th with a best of 8.11m and she also contested the hammer where she was unlucky with 3 no throws.
Lauren Pereira (U17) placed 5th in the B string 200m in 29.3 and in the B String Discus placed 5th with a best throw of 14.08.
Lauren MacGregor (U17) was outstanding on the Track. Lauren took on 4 races and was Orion's only race winner on the day,
winning the A string 1500m with a great sprint finish in a very respectable time of 4:51.2. An especially good result
it came after, taking a 3rd place in the B string 400m Hurdles in a new Under 17 club record time of 74.6 in an event she
hadn't ever run before plus 2nd place in the B String 800m in 2:25.5. After the 1500m Lauren teamed up to take part in the
4 x 100m relay also.
Track Team Captain Natalie Kipps (U23) marshalled and organised her Orion team exceptionally well and turned in her usual
excellent performances as she is still on the comeback trail after a series of winter injuries. Natalie was 2nd in the
800m A string race in a very decent 2:18.3 and was also 4th in the A string 400m in 62.5 before helping the Orion 4 x 400m
team to a very good 4th place from 10 teams.
Partnering her sister Natalie in the 400m, Rebecca Kipps (U20) ran the B string taking 5th place in 71.4. Becky went on
to help the Orion 4 x 400m relay team to a very good 4th place from 10 teams and in the Field events Becky was in action
with the Discus finishing 8th in the A string with a best throw of 14.04m.
Club Women's Captain Clare Thurgood ran her first 1500m race since her junior days but was rewarded with an excellent B
string 2nd place, equalling her pb of 5:21.0 and 9 points to the Orion tally.
Jay Andrews (U17) ran an excellent 3000m race to finish 3rd from over 20 runners in the combined A and B string race,
finishing in 10:55.1 for yet another sub-11 minute 3000m, a fete on the day only achieved by the first 3 runners over
the line. In the B string Katy Brett was having her first outing for Orion on the track and added valuable points with
4th in 12:47.1.
Jo Haddaway and Lauren Richardson were two busy Orion athletes in the field events.
Pole Vaulter Lauren Richardson equalled her personal best in the A String, finishing 3rd with a best of 2.10m. Lauren
then scored a pb in the A string high jump finishing 7th with a best jump of 1.35m. Lauren then finished 6th in the A
string Shot with 7.22m before joining the 4 x 400m Relay Team to run a solid anchor leg in 69.14 and help the team
to place 4th from 10.
Jo Haddaway started the day with 7th place in the Long Jump A string with a best of 3.67m, followed by the Javelin A
string with another 7th with a best throw of 17.04m. Jo finished off running leg 2 in the 4 x 100m relay team with 7th
place again.
Welcomed newcomer Angie Legg took 4th place in the B string Javelin with 15.86m and 7th in the B string Shot Putt with
5.42m before running leg 3 in the 4 x 400m relay team who she helped to 4th place.
Lets hope we can go on from here and turn out a similar sized or even bigger team for the remaining two fixtures at
Walton on 25th July and Watford on 5th September where we can aim to do even better.
Well Done All.
