Coming to a Sunday near you, soon, is…

THE LONDON MARATHON!!!
elite drinks stations

Orion Harriers are once again managing the 15k and 35k elite drinks
stations at London Marathon on Sunday 17th April. Tony and Collette
Gobby are looking after the 15k station.

A big welcome to Paul Robinson, a regular at many elite drinks stations
in past years, who has stepped in to be the 35k drinks station point of
contact for this year.

We have a number of very keen Olympic volunteers to consider, along
with many who have supported the event over a number of years. To be as
fair as we can and make sure no one is disappointed on the day, we are
asking everyone who wishes to volunteer TO HELP AND TO BE WITHIN THE
ELITE DRINKS STATION BARRIERS to make contact WELL BEFORE marathon day!

We’re sorry, but please do not just turn up on Marathon morning and
hope to get into a prime viewing spot.

Contact either Tony/Colette for the 15k water station or Paul for the
35k water station

15k: is near the Dome in Quebec Way.
If you want to help at that 15k Station, contact Colette and Tony Gobby : 01277 822184 or tonyg58@fsmail.net .
On the Souf side of the river, the race and runners pass nice and early!
After the Elite Runners are done drinking, Colette and Co retire to a grassy knoll for a picnic
and to cheer on the thousands of other runners.

35k: this is on north side of The Highway
It’s a busy spot with no grassy knolls.
After the Elite Runners have passed, we usually pack up the station and sometimes stand outside a pub waiting for our running friends to pass by…
If you want more info about the 35k station, Contact Paul Robinson:
0208 503 6023 or paulr008@gmail.com
Paul (and some brave others) will be down there by 7.15am but you needn’t show till about 9.00... if you’re feeling lazy. Cos we go for a quiet river run/jog, about 9.00...

Why do we do these Drinks Stations...? ...apart from the sheer pleasure of participating
in a World Class sporting event?

Well, it’s stuff you don’t get on a sofa, watching telly! Being there - to cheer on Orion Runners and friends from other clubs, plus the poor people reduced to walking but persevering - is a huge emotional buzz! Marvelling at the incredible speed of those elite runners: 26 miles back to back and EVERY MILE faster than 5 minute miling is such a thrill to actually SEE in the fast-moving flesh! Oh, and Orion gets a tiny number of guaranteed, free places in the event for next year. Oh, and Orion gets a small fee for our time and commitment.
Make a day of it to help yourself AND help your club!
