Loughton : about 6.5 miles : 06.10.07 Advertised at 8,800metres, 3 separate Garmine users recorded an average of 6.5 miles! For this runner, it felt slightly longer... it certainly took longer. It was great to see the Orion Juniors packing in winners in their races as we prepared for the off. And this eyewitness can vouch that with 3 laps on the far (eastern) side of the Roding, there was nowhere to hide - especially when Barnet's ever-young Richard McCormick then Matt Flannelly streamed past during that first far lap. But the heart soared when I saw those two hotly pursued by Richard Kingsnorth, then youngsters Jack, Shay, Ben and Daniel who packed in - with 'young' Neil McGoun - forming our first team - we had 8 in the top 20 (and 3 2nd claim...) - amazing. I was genuinely proud to see white shirt after white shirt, hurtle past. Even Orion's first Vet, big Eric, was a mere slim second behind Ben! And so it continued...

It was a welcome surprise ato see a very much needed Danny Moses turn out in a very competitive and strong Chingford league match that saw the likes of Barnet's Richard McCormick back in 6th place and Woodford putting on a show of strength with some of their young pretenders led by "our" 2nd-claim Woodford member Harold Wyber in 2nd and two of their young guns 3rd and 4th. It shows that the Chingford league still has a very strong and competitive side when teams that are in arguably 'the strongest league in the south [Metropolitan league]' still race in our cherished local Chingford league. Our Danny led Orion in, in 8th place - a great run from a young lad who shows great promise, with Neil just behind in 9th, Eric 16th, Gerry getting stronger and stronger 24th, a first showing of young Chris Shapland in a very respectable 27th with Cap'n Dave bringing the team in, in 31st he'll come good... one day! The Ladies team that a day before was in tatters - with so few runners available - somehow rallied round to put on a great show with Clare leading the team in, as any good Captain should, in 5th. A first and most successful run from young Catherine Conway just behind Clare in 6th by a second, followed by Mary 10th, Karen 19th, Alison 26th with our deputy Anne bringing the team in 28th, with so many other Orion Harriers closing in, to make all run faster and stronger - it was still a great result. The Orion Men's, Ladies As, Bs and Vets teams well under strength still did enough to keep Barnet in touch on the day - only dropping a point overall and still on top of nearly all Championship leagues. With so many Orion Members wearing their colours with pride, over this festive season, so many excesses to be had but still wanting to run their hearts out it goes a long way to saying they love their sport, club and league and for that Orion can be truly proud.
