Hog Hill : 01.10.13
First Time Out: Hog Hill October 2013.

Orion kicked off their Winter League season with the traditional blast around the Redbridge Cycle Track
at Hog Hill. There were signs that this could be a good season too, with the Juniors looking dominant in
nearly all age groups and the Mens A team coming 2nd, the Women 5th, and wins for the Mens Vets, Womens
Vets and the Mens B Team.
There was a terrific turnout by Orion Juniors, which sadly was not matched by other clubs. The U13 was
an Orion only affair with Emily Sharpe taking win ahead of Adibhean Pearce, Megan Penfold, Lucy Vundum,
Lottie Grant and Bethany Chambers. The under 13 Boys were also impressive with 7 of the 9 runners, James
Wood missing first place by 1 second led the team home for the win. The U15 girls also had a good run out,
with Nancy Callagher (2nd) followed home by Katie Inch, Katherine Myers, Kayleigh Chappell and Jazz Dowswell
to complete the team win. The under 15 boys had 8 runners out with Jake Callis (1st), George Day and Harry
Sloman taking 1,2,3 qwith Josh Iton 5th completing the team to beat Woodford Green comfortably.
U17 Girls ran well to fill 3rd to 6th places, but the small field meant that Enfield with only runners
took the team win with a couple of ghost counters. Once again the U17 race was an all Orion affair with
Cheyenne Antoine-Chagar taking bragging rights ahead of Jack Ryan and Ben Pattison.
In the Senior race Frankie Conway led the team home in 3rd place in 16.38 , followed home by Brian Jenkins
(5th), Matt Woodman (7th), Kevin Newell (21st), Barny Foot (24th), and Neil McGoun (29th), to close out in
88 points 10 behind a charging Barnet and District AC. The Women were led home by Christine Inch with great
support from Mary Armitage, Sarah Maidment, Lorraine Gosling, Pippa Dowswell and Melissa Timpson. The first
five also scoring for the ladies Vets who along with Jackie Callegher won with a team score of 166 beating
Eton Manor by 22 to take their place at the top of league table. The Menís Vets did well to follow suit.
With Joe Happe taking a year off running to try his hand at Ultimate Cage Fighting this is likely to be a
tough season for the Vets team. Despite not being as quick as Barnetís top 2, Orion packed well with Barny,
Neil Swift, Colin Read, Giles Hopkinson, Captain Tim Wright, and Kevin Julian all helping to bring the team
home 50 points ahead of the chasers. Orion were also able to show our strength in depth, picking up the win
in the B team competition with Richard Ashton and Bix Hall joining Swift, Colin, Giles and Tim for a total
of 199, 46 ahead of Barnet.
A good start with 47 Senior Orion runners putting it on the line and with Loughton on Saturday 12th we have
an opportunity to build on this and see if we can put our name on few of those trophies at the end of the
season. Remember there is the special promise of a mention in the race report for everyone who trains hard
through October and reaps the rewards by running faster at Hog Hill 2.

Chingford League Match 2 : Loughton : 12.11.13
Ė The second coming

The second Chingford league match of the season proved a small concrete bridge too far for our competitors
as both teams and individual performances from runners young and old flooded the top of the leader boards.
Again there was only minimal opposition for our juniors, however that did not deter some brave running as
the under 13 girls filled 4 of the top five spots with Emily Sharpe just holding off Aoibheann Pearce to
take first place. Bethany Chambers was 3rd and Lottie Grant 5th. There were more noteworthy runs by the
U13 boys James Wood taking 2nd, Cameron Cambell 6th, Sam Allum 7th, James Coleman, 8th and Jamie Goohew 9th.
Nany Callegher and Katie Inch were 3rd and 4th for the U15 girls. A strong turnout in the U15 boys saw 8
runners. Harry Sloman led Orion home in 3rd, followed by George Day, Josh Iton, Charlie Ackland, Jake Ofiler,
Anthoy Coleman, Jack Patterson and Joss Foot.
The U17 girls showed up in numbers too, first home was Serena Espuete (2nd), followed in by Madeline Carr
(4th), Amy Huke (5th), Joelle Ewen (6th) and Sophie Grant (7th). The U17 boys continued to show good form,
with Jack Ryan 2nd, Ben Pattinson 3rd, Haider Razzaq 6th, Thomas Young 7th and Callum Smyth 8th.
Orion lead the league in U13 boys and girls, U15 boys, U17 boys and girls and are 2nd in the U15 girls.
There was also a good turnout from our senior runners, with top lady Claire Thurgood making her first foray
of the year out on the country, Frankie Conway, Brian Jenkins and at one point the waters of the Roding
river parted as Moses returned.
After 3 years away at University, Frankie showed what a warm house, free laundry service and home cooking
can do as he had a sensational run, sprinting home to finish second, ahead of some very accomplished
athletes. Jenks put in another solid performance for 8th and Dan Moses, returning from a broken foot, ran
well for 17th. The A team was completed by a trio of old men (although one is not so old) Barny Foot 23rd,
Dean Moy 28th and mud loving Eric Paul 29th. In a tight battle Orion took the win over Vicky Park 107-110.
The B-team were more dominant with Neil McGoun, Neil Swift, Colin Read, Daniel Penfold, Richard Ashton,
Giles Hopkinson scoring 234, 46 ahead of VPH.
The Vets were also out in force, led home by Barny and backed up by Dean, Eric, Swift, Colin and Giles for
a total of 198, 125 points ahead of the usually superior Barnet squad to make it two wins on the trot. All
three senior menís teams now sit on top of the league.
We should have a special mention for Ian Clark, who typified the club spirit, and despite having a really
really severe case of the sniffles was still able to turn up and cheer the team on as long as he did as
his mother told him and kept his coat, hat and scarf on at all times.
The ladies had a good day, placing 3rd in the seniors and 2nd in the Vets. Claire Thurgood ran strongly for
2nd place, and was backed up well by Hayley Rogerson, 11th, Nikki Barnett 14th, Christine Inch, 17th, Mary
Armitage, 20th, Lorraine Gosling 23rd , for a total of 87, not too far behind Eton Manor (63) and VPH (72).
Despite the youthful looks it was only for Lisa Thorn to slot in in place of Claire for a Vets total of
115 just 4 points off winners VPH, but good enough to hold on to top spot in the league.
So the club is flying in the Chingford leagues and if we are not careful weíll take off at hog hill.

Hog Hill : 05.11.13
As tradition dictates on the first Tuesday of November, all runners of true purpose head to Hog Hill
for the Chingford League and to measure progress over the previous month.
38 senior runners turned out to watch the fireworks in a record sized field that caused the finishing
area to back up as everyone sprinted up the hill in search of a new PB. 9 junior and 14 senior runners
got home faster than in October (and another 5 probably did but their November time was not recorded),
so hats off to Jamie Goodhew, Katherine Myers, Josh Iton, Joss Foot, Maddie Carr, Joelle Ewen, Jack
Ryan, Ben Pattinson, Haider Razzaq, Glen Irwin (biggest improver with a massive 64s), Nick Webb, Buddy
Green, Barny Foot, Frankie Conway, Colin Read, Brian Jenkins, Neil McGoun, Phil Hernon, Neil Swift,
Giles Hopkinson, Mary Armitage, Stuart Colley, Gary Bartlett, Kevin Newell, Steve Timpson, Melissa
Timpson, Gill McKever, and Kay Holford.
The first Junior race for U13s had just 3 girls (all Orion) and 12 boys. Emily Sharpe was first home
in a close finish with Aoibheann Pearce, with Lucy Vundum 3rd. James Wood had another solid run for
2nd place in the boys race. In the U17 race Jack Ryan once again took the win just ahead of Ben
Pattison with Haider Razzaq 3rd, Maddie Carr and Joelle Ewen were 2nd and 3rd in their race, George
Day was 2nd in the U15 boys to lead the league overall and Isobel Mills took first place in the
girls with Katie Inchís 4th being enough for her to top the league overall. The Junior teams top
all the age group categories.
There were individual and team success in the senior race too. Frankie Conway was first Orion home
with an impressive 2nd. Dan Moses (6th), Brian Jenkins (7th) Matt Woodman 13th, Barny Foot 20th and
Kevin Newell 21st picked up the A team win with 69 points. The B team were 2nd behind Vicky Park,
led home by Neil McGoun, and Vets Colin Read, Neil Swift, Giles Hopkinson, Simon Laver, Adam Baker
to keep the B team on top of the league. The Menís Vets made it 3 wins out of 3 with a comfortable
win over Barnet to increase their lead at the top of the table.
The Senior Ladies had a great night with Nikkii Barnett, Hayley Rogerson, Christine Inch, Mary
Armitage, Liz Maidment, Melissa Timpson, taking the team to 3rd place with Gill McKever slotting in
instead of Melissa to take the Vets team into 2nd place and keep their top place in the league.
There is abit of Chingford League break now before the Christmas dinner fuelled race at Ally Pally
on 28th December and if eating huge amounts coverts into improved race performances we can expect
Joe Happe to have a stormer.

Hackney Marshes : 18.01.14
World in Motion: Chingford League, Hackney Marshes, January 18th 2014

The weather was set fair, the language from the football pitches was perfectly ripe and the ground
saturated. It was time to race at Hackney Marshes.
The seniors have been having a good season in the Chingford league and we went into race 5 leading
in all 3 mens categories, with the ladies were 3rd in the seniors and 2nd in the vets. Once again
we had a good turn out with 29 men 7 ladies toeing the start line.
The senior men were led home by Big Brian Jenkins who finished strongly to take 7th place, Dan Moses
on his way from injury had a solid run for 9th, with Barny Foot (12th), Colin Read (15th), Neil
McGoun (20th) and Eric Paul (25th) for a team score of 88, nine behind a strong Trent Park, but
crucially ahead of Victoria Park to extend the lead at the top of the league to 7 points. The very
big shield could be heading back to Orion. The B team were even better with Craig Horsburgh (29th),
Big Joe Happe (35th), the improving David Wilson (46th), the tanned and relaxed Simon Laver (48th),
a great run from Glen Gosling for 50th and Stuart Colley 12th man home in 57th for a total of 265
and a B team win.
After a disappointing 3rd place at Ally Pally the vets lead at the top had been cut to a single
point and league holders Barnet were going hard to retain their title. Despite the crocked Tim
Wright and the club champion Neil Swift being unavailable. The team rose to the challenge led home
by Barny Foot who took his first V40 win in a Chingford League, and followed home by Colin, Eric,
Joe, Simon and Glen for a comfortable 49 point win.
First home once again for the ladies was Nikkii Barnett in an impressive 4th, followed by Hayley
Rogerson (13th), Christine Inch (22nd), Lorraine Gosling (25th), Liz Maidment (26th) and Pippa
Dowswell (33rd) for a total of 123 good enough for 3rd in the seniors but 2nd in the vets to keep
themselves in the hunt for the title just 3 points behind Vicky Park.
Top performers in the individual standings are Brian Jenkins 3rd Senior, Barny Foot 2nd Vet, Eric
Paul 5th Supervet, Nikkii Barnet 6th Senior Ladies and Vet and Chris Inch 5th Supervet. Next up the
super fast mud free Vicky Park with the newly refurbished Cafe, now that really is Joe Happeís kind
of Cross Country.

Highams Park : 01.03.14
Relays didn't change the top teams but there were a few mid-table order changes.
About 120 senior runners competed. Barely half the number of the average race field.
Of the 11 League clubs only 6 fielded scoring teams in the men's competition and 4 in the women's!
